Is your pool sinking your summer? Why it’s time for a new liner.

At Pool Pirates, we believe every captain deserves smooth sailing. Here is everything you need to know about when, why, and how to replace your pool liner.
A new pool liner from Pool Pirates

Your backyard pool should be your personal oasis, not a source of stress. But even the best “vessels” face wear and tear from the sun, chemicals, and time. If your pool liner is starting to look more like a weathered shipwreck than a sparkling treasure, it’s time to consider a replacement.

How long does a pool liner actually last?

On average, a quality vinyl liner lasts between 10 and 15 years. However, factors like local weather, chemical balance, and how many swimmers you have on board can shift that timeline. If your liner has hit the double-digit mark, it’s a good idea to start keeping an eye on its condition.

Red Flags: When to call the Pool Pirates

Not sure if you need a full replacement? Look out for these “telltale” signs:

  • The Fade: Harsh UV rays and unbalanced water eventually strip the colour and pattern out of your vinyl. If your pool looks dull or gray, the material is likely becoming brittle as the polymers in the liner that give it its elastic stretch are starting to expire.
  • The Big Squeeze (Shrinkage): As vinyl ages, it loses its elasticity and can pull away from the pool tracks or coping. If you see gaps or the liner “popping out,” it’s a major red flag.
  • Cracks and Tears: Small leaks can often be patched, but if you’re seeing multiple cracks or dry-rot above the waterline, the “hull” is compromised.
  • The Mysterious Water Loss: If you find yourself topping off the pool more than once a week, you likely have a hidden leak. This can erode away the sand, soil or contrete beneath the liner, leading to potential and costly repairs.
